This is why smart home kit vendors offering self monitoring have the potential to grow more quickly by addressing the needs of non traditional security customers. These customers are increasingly interested in home control and potentially security but not in professional monitoring fees. — Contributed by Tom Kerber, Director, IoT Strategy, Parks AssociatesAs Managing Editor, Karyn Hodgson writes exclusive cover stories, such as SDM’s State of the Market series, as well as other feature length articles and case studies. ADT is number two on our list of best wireless home security systems, and it’s no wonder. They became the first home security system network in 1874 and have grown ever since to become the largest home security provider in North America. ADT Security Services offers more services than the typical security company. Their wireless systems include free professional installation, and if you’d rather lease equipment instead of buy, ADT has options for that. They will also monitor security systems from other alarm companies for about $20 per month. ADT also offers exceptional medical alert devices. Here’s a look at why ADT makes our list for the best wireless home security system:ADT gives you lots of options. You can lease a system from them or buy monitoring for an existing system. They can monitor equipment made by many of the leading brands. They support a full spectrum of wireless security features, including video monitoring, home automation, sensors to prevent an environmental disaster, and medical alerts. ADT’s wearable panic button allows immediate access to emergency dispatchers.

If you have a newer house, this may not be an issue. But as we found out, older homes with more antiquated systems may not deliver enough juice. One of our test houses, which was built in 1946, was sending only about 10 volts of electricity to the existing doorbell, which wasn't enough to power the two doorbells in the roundup that lack built in batteries. After we upgraded the doorbell's circuit to a 20 volt transformer, everything worked as advertised. Most people shouldn't have to upgrade their transformers, especially with newer houses, and the two doorbells that have built in batteries don't require power from the doorbell at all. Some doorbells, like the Ring Video Doorbell 2 and the RemoBell, can run on battery power.
